When We Have Nothing To Lean On
We dance
If you’re looking for something wonderful and inspiring to watch, the video below might be it. New York Times bestselling author Martha Beck talks about the incredible joy of attending a concert that was primarily standing room only. She noticed that the people who didn’t have anything to lean on or to sit on danced the entire time, oblivious to foot pain or exhaustion.
She added that the other people who had something to lean on or sit on mostly didn’t dance.
The same concert, but two different behaviors.
As we have explored before on this Substack, Beck talked about the joy of being at a live performance and the feeling of community you can have with hundreds or thousands of people who are experiencing the same thing you are.
Not being able to attend live performances was the hardest part of the pandemic for me. That is the way I recharge.
I keep thinking that dancing right now is an act of rebellion, and a part of the revolution. When I share this with people, I get a resounding, “Yes!”
So, as structures we have counted on get taken away and we feel like we have nothing to lean on, maybe the best thing we can do is dance.
In fact, I am going dancing tonight.
My favorite dance partner and I are going to a disco event where a live DJ will be playing the music they played at Studio 54 back in the day. I think it will be a blast.
Bring on the funky bass lines and disco ball magic. I need to move to the groove.
