Everything is moving so fast. There is instability everywhere and you are probably feeling it. So while it’s tempting to try to avoid feeling this by denying, rationalizing, or numbing, you will likely find this won’t work for long.
When you are feeling triggered or are feeling yourself starting to spiral, you can become dysregulated. But there are things you can do to reregulate quickly and self-soothe. Often, you notice the signs of dysregulation in your body, so the place to start is to work with your body.
In the video below, Anna Runkle walks us through techniques to get yourself out of dysregulation and back into a regulated state quickly. Reregulating quickly can stop you from doing things you might regret later. (The context she sets in the beginning is important, but if you want to jump to the 14 techniques she suggests, you can start at 6:29.)
When you are anxious or stressed, you can experience brain fog and confusion. You might find that you just can’t think. There is a reason for this: your logical mind goes offline when we go into fight / flight / freeze mode. The prefrontal cortex is essentially shut down and resources are rerouted to enable you to fight or run.
You will not be able to think clearly and will not have access to creative problem-solving when you are in an anxious state. In the video below, I talk with one of my favorite healers, Shweta Shyamani, about how to dial down your anxiety, including techniques you can do during a work meeting - and nobody will know you are doing them. Consider these your personal stealth moves! You’re welcome.
